Cissy Vernon either died from some unknown reason, or she may have been lured into an open grave by Marshall McClain and then buried alive. The grave was dug by the Groundskeeper, Old Man Corcoran. Also buried in the graveyard was Marshall McClain, Scott Walden, Ron Jacobson, Laura Ayers and Mary Alice Reardon. Their ghosts would all wander around and haunt the graveyard at night. Usually playing hide and seek, possibly she and the rest of them became evil and vengeful ghosts looking to take other people down with them.
It's revealed that she was the last and most recent to join the "group" of friends. Since Marshall once said that he promised after her no one else would join. Also she was very selective about letting anyone else join the group, and tried to not let anyone else in. It's unknown if anyone else was asked after she was. That is until 1993 when Marshall invited Jack and Kenny Harris to join their group.
She was cold and unfriendly to them and tried to scare them off by telling them a tall tale about Old Man Corcoran. She told them that once caught a child stealing from him and as a punishment and cut the child's hand off. Also she told them he was an evil ghost who haunts the graveyard and is always on the lookout for trespassers.
She didn't know that during their hide and seek game, that Jack and Kenny really did bump into Old Man Corcoran and ran home scared out of their skin. She just thought her story scared them too much and she kept teasing them. Then calling them chicken and making pocking sounds at them. She also got the others in the group to tease them too.
Marshall gave Jack and Kenny another chance and during another hide and seek game. Then during the game, Jack and Kenny snuck away to steal Old Man Corcoran's harmonica to prove he is real to the them all. Then they stumbled into the open grave that she was hiding in. They tried to show her the harmonica to prove they were telling the truth.
She didn't seem listen or care. All she did was demand they get out of her hiding spot and wanted nothing more than that. With her getting a little sensitive and almost upset about it. Finally they get out and when they leave. She tells them get your own grave. Kenny told her I didn't see your name on it! The camera zooms up to her and she says "Well look a little closer next time". she was the first one who hinted that she was dead. After this she climbed down into the open grave and wasn't seen again.
Eventually it was proven that everything bad and negative she told Jack and Kenny Harris about Old Man Corcoran was all a lie. Because Old Man Corcoran showed up just in time to prevent Jack and Kenny from being buried alive by one of her friends.
